Local History Tour🚌

We had a fabulous Local History Tour this morning, taking in Lackafinna village, Oxford House (Major’s) and the Protestant Graveyard in Ballinamore.

Sincere thanks to Lucas’ Dad, Vinny who met us in Lackafinna to show us around. We got to see the house in which Lucas’ Granny and Sophia’s Great Granddad were reared (Murtagh’s). Vinny told us that these houses were the first locally to be connected to the grid during the Rural Electrification Scheme.

Vinny and his family saved hay in these fields…not too long ago!

We had a brief look at the old Landlord’s house in Oxford. This belonged to Thomas Tuohy before it was sold in 1901 to a retired army major, the now derelict house is know locally to this day as “Major’s”.

Finally we stopped off at the Protestant Graveyard which was build by the Ormsbys of Ballinamore House in 1779. There are a number of graves here, including that of the infamous “Black” Anthony. We used crayons to make rubbings of the headstones.
